Firefox 2, First Impressions

firefox2.png
I've upgraded to Firefox 2 as soon as the binaries was available on the Mozilla servers. My first impressions are very good, especially that I'm now very used to deal with the memory issue which still high by default, for example its 376Mb now at the time that I'm writing this post while Firefox haven't been closed since 5 days !

Design and Improved tabbed browsing

The new design is not bad, even that I'm not feeling comfortable with the new colors especially that most of my extensions are not working, and that's another story. I liked the new tabbing concept, which makes the width of a displayed tabs almost the same, while before you can have very small tabs that you don't know why you have opened.

Improved Add-ons manager and new extension system

For the extension I had 24 incompatible extensions from a total of 33 installed !! And that's too much ! I have made a list of all incompatible extension until now on my machine :

Screen grab 0.6
MinimizeToTray 0.0.1.2006030906+
Bookmark Backup 0.3.3
WellRounded 0.43
Disable Targets for downloads 1.0.1
iFox 2.3
Qute 3.1
Colorful Tabs 1.4
Download Manager Tweak 0.7.1
Mass installer 0.3.1
Live HTTP Header 0.12
TextMarker! 0.3.0
Smoke 2.0.5
Tab X 0.9.2
Mozilla accessibility extension 0.99.1.1831
Palette grabber 0.3.0
CSS Viewer 1.0.1
Update Notifier 0.1.4
Safire 1.09
Fasterfox 1.0.3
Permatabs 1.2.0
TimeTracker 1.1.2
Allpeers Beta 0.52
KS FormKiller HGH 2.08

Later KS FormKiller, Dragdropupload have been update for compatibility, followed by minimizeToTray and AllPeers. I'm wondering why other developers didn't update their extension especially that the Firefox release was announced months before and everybody knows about it. The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions, nobody seems to be interested in those updates ?

Built-in phishing protection

I'm very happy with the new Built-in phishing protection which warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user to their home page. Phishing Protection is turned on by default, and works by checking sites against either a local or online list of known phishing sites. This list is automatically downloaded and regularly updated when the Phishing Protection feature is enabled.

I think it's really a great step to make a better web experience for all Firefox users, and a good reason to make IE users switch to Firefox today !

Inline spell checking

Sincerely I didn't knew about this one, and first when I noticed I thought it was implemented on the website that I was using. built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms without having to use a separate application. Now for example I use it while posting news or articles, it's really very useful and easy to use. It's amazing how Firefox 2 is great !

Conclusion

Overall I'll give it a 8/10 score for this release for all the great features that have been introduced. There is still many issues to be fixed in this release to make it the next generation of Internet browsers, also I hope that designers will make a better work for the next releases so you really feel that you are using something new.
